Neither Anna Nicole nor Judge Dum-Dum nor Britney nor even W. proves that the US is "going downhill fast." In one sense the attention given to the mindless celebrities is a good thing: it shows that their addled antics are still news rather than the norm (in which case they wouldn't be reported) and that the American public retains some capacity to be shocked by high-profile misbehavior.

(BTW, I feel sorry Anna Nicole and Britney. Each played her buxom blondeness for more than it was worth, and neither had the moral education or intellectual equipment to handle it. Celebrity in America is now like the French Revolution, consuming its own children.)

Not even W's misgovernance of the country is a harbinger that the Republic will soon collapse into the same dust as Athens or Rome, or that Bin Ladin will in the next few years preach the Koranic revelation from minbars in St. John the Divine, the US Capitol, and the Hollywood Bowl. Many mediocrities have served as President, but our system has redundancies--the famous checks and balances--that keep one person's stupidities from bringing disaster down on the whole country. Last year's election, to cite the most obvious example, produced Democratic majorities in the Congress that will keep the Administration on a tight leash for the next two years.

I admit that we often present a sorry spectacle to the world, but that's the price of having an open society. Americans are no stupider or sleazier than any of the other packs of primates that pass as nation-states in the world; we just have a bit less shame about parading our imperfections.

extra Britney Spears. Now, she's checked herself out of rehab for a 2d time after below 24 hours. Why do no longer her friends/family individuals do an intervention. What a trainwreck she is! Anna Nicole Smith's difficulty is only unhappy. She could be buried together with her son, the place she desires to be. I additionally essentially desire Larry Birkhead is the toddler's father......

All legitimate examples of a degenerating society. Why? Who is to blame? How can it be fixed? In my opinion while all of these examples as well as many others are true, I blame the news media who have taken all of these so-called sensational stories as far as they possibly can and have nurtured them beyond belief. For what purpose? Advertising dollars. The higher their ratings, the more money they all make. Fox News comes off as America's best news channel. Straight facts as they occur. Nonsense! They are part of this news game and come off a bit smarter than the others but they too milk each and every story for what it is worth. OReilly seems to have his agenda. No way. He is monitored carefully by Fox. So are Hannity and Colms.
These so-called sensational stories are not new. They milked the same type of story when I was a young man. Anything and EVERYTHING for money.

These people are invented to distract you. They are corporate-invented images. While you're watching them on TV, you're being placated and pacified.

How can they possibly matter to most people? What good are they?

Just because they are on TV doesn't mean they are relevant. TV shouldn't and doesn't dictate what is relevant in our lives.

Most people I know couldn't care less. Sometimes I wonder who is actually watching this stuff.

The older I get, the more I realize that what we see is what we are supposed to see. It's insulting. The images and ideas that we're being asked to swallow.

Life gets way more interesting when you turn off the TV, open your eyes and aren't influenced by the nonsense on TV.

Smith was famous for getting naked, getting high, and gold digging.

Spears is famous for flirting with nudity, singing, and making really bad decisions with her kids.

The Judge from Smith's case is famous for crying like a little girl. Turns out he was a Bronx cabbie before getting his degrees. I'd say this is the BIGGEST sign this country is in serious trouble!

The answer is the Media for reporting this nonsense as news rather than leaving them for the circus freaks that they are. None of them are representative of the United States population as a whole.

Based solely on your examples cited in the question, I'd have to say that once you're in the sewer, there's no "going downhill" from there.
