Because the companies that make these lines spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing and advertising, to achieve brand recognition, and to cultivate an image that will make them attractive to a certain demographic. Because people are suceptible to advertising and conscious of image, they actually believe that their identity depends on wearing something that is "in". To the point that they honestly think that those clothes are better or prettier. Witness caroline c above.

The marketing image is what is selling the clothes. People are willing to pay for that image, sometimes regardless of the quality of the product itself, because they are brainwashed.

Not to mention the notion of social status based on economic class. If you can afford to pay $50 for a sh|tty hollister t-shirt then it says that you have money; If you buy Penny's then it has a connotation that there's not a lot of liquid assets around.

In fairness, every brand/line designs to the look that their target market prefers. They're in the business of selling clothes, after all. So the clothes at Penny's are just as much designed to be attractive to working middle class as the clothes at Abercrombie are to appeal to snotty upper-middle class white kids.

Save your money.

People buy it for the name and to try an to be popular. Their is no difference between pennys clothes and holister clothes. If you think about it, people who wear those clothes are not really individuals. In my school almost everyone looks alike. Why would you want to look like a holister clone? All their clothes also have their company's name all over it, so really you are paying to wear the name. And most of their clothes are really expensive and transparent. So more money for less quality, sounds like the popular kids right? More money and less brains.

I would say people wear those brands to be trendy, popular and because its safe. Also people (most) know what those brands cost and I think people are afraid to be seen as cheap or in cheap clothing..

I totally agree with you on this one...i have never been into it myself..i am 29 and see this phenomenon ..just w/ different brands and with children's name brands.

Do what feels right to you and what you like, you will save bundles of money in the long run. Plus name brands are really not that important in t he whole scheme of life anyways!

Sometimes those brands can be just as much, if not less expensive, than stores like JcPenney. I just got two Aeropostale tees at the mall today on sale for $5.99 each! The other stores sometimes have better qualities, actually, and a lot of girls do like the little eagle, bird or moose logo on their polos and camis (it shows investment in apparel, which leads to popularity or popularity wannabe status). JcPenney is nice, but the preppy style stores you are referring to have a lot of modern changes within season, though you can always use camis, hoodies, henleys and jeans (no matter what season they are from, unless there is a drastic detail).

Uh, it's all because of peer-pressure, wanting to be cool, wanting to be in the cool group, and if they are in the cool group, wanting to be envied. It sucks, and it's a part of life.
I don't generally know what a JC Penny Tee is (Live in Australia!), but I do know that if it's the same there as it is here, then it's probably because it's cheap. If it cost $150, people would be snapping them up. Humans LOVE to spend money!

They do not have enough confidence in themselves to wear sensible clothes.
JC Penny and Wal Mart sell the same thing for a lot less.

I dress very well and am complimented often! I would never pay the STUPID price for a "Name Brand" piece of clothing or accessories. I laugh at the silly people that do!!

Hmm...i do no longer believe the countless different solutions here. only via fact somebody "hates" yet another keep does no longer mean they are jealous or won't be able to discover the money for it. There are some shops i do in comparison to via fact the common of the outfits is poor. Like after one or 2 washes, the clothing coach significant positioned on and tear. There must be many the explanation why somebody would not like a keep and that they should not be generalized. additionally, human beings have diverse flavor and a few human beings prefer to no longer positioned on a particular variety. i do no longer agree approximately human beings "making exciting" of human beings's outfits selections. they only could admire that diverse human beings like countless issues.

It's a status thing, look my mommy can pay waaay too much for my clothes. And it's so they look like everyone else, so nobody can pick on them for looking different.

I hate all that crap. I will be loyal to a brand because I know it fits and wears well, but that whole status clothing label thing & going along with the herd is not for me.

I prefer individualism, not cookie cutter.

Sometimes, wearing branded clothes gives the person a feeling of pride being able to wear and afford such clothes. For some people, like those who have low self-esteem for example, wearing branded stuff makes them feel good about their self and makes them feel proud when people see them with such brand.

I know I wish I knew too! Those brands are popular at my school too! I have an entire wardrobe of target stuff and I look just as cute as every one else at school. I do have some Urban Outtfitters stuff but that was a birthday treat and i bought it because i thought it was different! if i thought i could duplicate it at target i wouldnt let my parents have bought it!
