No, her SS isn't taxed if it's her only income so she no longer needs to file. She might want to file this year to get the $30.00 phone tax rebate, however.

Not usually unless she wants to take advantage of some of the tax relief programs for the elderly and low income.

I file my Mom's only because Missouri has a property tax credit for the elderly/low income. She pays her property taxes on her house and then Missouri refunds her $750 after I turn the right forms into them.

The property tax credit is not advertised, so a lot of people don't know about it. A few years back I was able to get an elderly couple who lived in the neighborhood 3 years worth of refunds because they never knew about the tax relief program. It was about $700 per year. Shame is that they had been qualified for this refund for about 18 years .... but didn't know about it.

The tax relief also applies to those renting. Check into it to see if your state has a similar program....then file if needed.

I live in Connecticut and my mom and many of her friends are living off of the same fixed incomes as your grandma and none of them have to file. Infact my mom actually gets a check for $300.00 every fall (that she has to file for that the government typically doesn't advertise) because she and her friends qualify for some kind of refund for the disabled and elderly who rent apartments who are on a fixed income. My mom lives in a subsidized apartment complex and she still qualifies for this. You should try to find out if your grandmother might also qualify. But I know that that has nothing to do with taxes.
