My son is 2 weeks old tomorrow, his umbilical cord has not fallen off yet, and it bleeds sometimes. The blood never gushes, but it will... ooze? out from around the stump. It doesnt seem to bother him, but there is an awful lot more blood than I'd like. Is this normal? he doesn't see the doctor untill next friday. Should I take him in earlier, or is the bleeding okay?

My son will be 8 weeks tomorrow and I had the same question. I thought it was infected, when in reality its pretty uncommon for this to happen if your cleaning it properly.alcohol pads are an easy way to do so. its just a normal part of the healing process as freaky looking as it is! best of luck to you!!!

Normally, umbilical cord of the baby usually falls off 7 to 10 days.Contants cleaning of the cord with alcohol prevents infection.Once the cord starts to detached it bleeds a little. If there is severe bleeding then it must be reported to the doctor. All you can do for now is to put pressure on the cord remember it has 2 artery and one vein inside. If the bleeding stops it might be that the cord was accidentally pull out or was rub hard against something. If it doesnt stop then the stump needs to be reclamped or sutured right away.

At our doctor's office, they have a call in hour every morning where you can ask the doctor questions. This would be a perfect question for the doctor. It's probably fine, but I know I would feel better if I called the doctor and asked. I can't tell you how many questions I've asked the doctor...after you talk to the doc, the doctor can tell you whether or not you need to bring your son in earlier.

It can be so overwhelming to have a new baby, so when questions arise, no matter how simple, you should feel free to call and ask them.

It should have done fallen off! My dr. had to lance my 1st born. He used this stick and singed it off! It was oozing and smelley! After that it healed normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take him on in and they will know exactly what to do! Good luck! Oh and this caused no pain, my baby did not even cry! I just do not remeber the method they called this procedure, but it worked and healed and your dr. will help you if there is a problem! I made sure with my next two kids, that I used alcohol 3 times a day and they never had that problem! New mommies do not always know this, atleast I did not!
