My daughter did a science project for school. In the experiment she took four differant colors of water, and compared it to a glass of clear water. The clear water evaporated faster than the colored water, now she needs to know why. And I can't figure it out. Any help would be great!

Its not water any more. It is something else. Same as if you added alcohol (which mixes perfectly with water). Now you have "something else" and all its characteristics will be different. The dye doesn't seem like much, but it makes it "different" chemically.

The dissolved color is a different molecule than the water molecule. The color molecule binds with water to form the colored solution. There is energy associated with the bond between the dye and the water that must be overcome for the water attached to the dye to evaporate. In pure water, this energy barrier is not present. Therefore, the colored water evaporates slower, because it requires more energy to free the water molecules from the liquid state.

Th coloring that she dissolved in the water was polar. This means that it helped to hold the water molecules together, keeping them from floating off (evaporating). I hope this helped. It's a chemical law that I just learned in AP Chemistry

Well, my guess would be that the colored water evaporates slower because it has the extra stuff in it, which might take longer to evaporate.

i guess the colors in colored water would increase the density of the water by a bit and so it would take longer for all of it to evaporate.
