I want to learn how to sew...I will need a sewing machine and I want a very basic, old style model. for some reason I think it would be best to learn on something very basic. One that is manual?

something like 50-100-200 years ago style....NOT VINTAGE, just simple....but that is inexpensive and will last a long time and not mess up my fabric. I want to master a simpler machine and develope skills and a few years down the line get a more modern one.

but for now, I would like a basic sewing machine. Can anyone reccomend one? It doesn't have to be by brand...I would rather go by price, and then simple model, then brand or whatever.

thanks

Thanks, I like the answers I am getting so far.

Just in case, I have a few details. I am also looking for nothing too complicated, no accessories (or few), not really cheap..since I hear those break easily.

Kinda sturdy or light?

NO fancy stitching just press and line. What I hope is that I'll be able to make dresses one day....

Something that will really help me learn the insides and outsides of the sewing machine so I could master it (i am sorta a perfectionist...but thats a bad word to me!) eventually I would like to progress to more complex ones. But I will definitely look into your suggestions. Thanks!

thanks again!

Sears Kenmore are the best for simplicity and basic functioning. You don't need all of the bells and whistles, just sewing a straight seam. And they last forever. I have had mine for 25 years.

If you have not sewn before, dont buy a new one. Pick up a good used one. It doesn't make sense to buy a new one if you don't like sewing. Also, after you learn to sew, and decide you like it, you will have a better idea of the features you want in your permanent machine. Just for your info., I bought a straight stitch used Singer 30 years ago. With proper maintenance and care, it is still sewing like new. I used to make all my childrens' clothes and my husband's shirts with it. I just re-read your question. Please don't buy that old a machine. They were not the same as they are today, and that fact alone, I'm sure, will turn you off to sewing. Start with a used one, maybe 20 years old. If I were to sell mine, I'd probably ask about $20.00

Kenmore sewing machines are very good machines, easy to use and have a good warranty. Janome machines are excellent, price competitive and have a good warranty, too (Janome makes the Kenmore line actually!).
There are some very basic models. The one I recommend is the Jem Gold, Jem Gold 2 or the Jem Silver. These are 3/4 sized machines with full power motors. They weigh less than 15 pounds and are very easy to use. I have free-motion quilted a queen sized quilt on a Jem Gold.
You'll have to look for Janome dealer in your area. Good Luck!
(You never know about good deals at your local dealer, you might get lucky!)

BTW: Janome is pronounced Ja-Know-Me.

Yes...Janome are good machines....I prefer Elna. They have a good variety from basic to fancy machines...reasonable prices, and very reliable. Elna hold their value if you want to trade one in.
You did not say what you were sewing...clothes, quilts, home accessories.... so you might want to go to a sewing shop and look around at different machines and ask the employees there as to what they might recommend for you. Have Fun!

I suggest a Singer with the foot treadle. It doesn't get any simpler and better than that.
