The cheap code readers are just that, a code reader. They will read and display codes, and will turn the "Check Engine" light off.
If there is any way you can save up a bit and purchase a reader that is capable of–
1) Reading and displaying "Live Data"
2) Reading and displaying the "Freeze Frame" data
3) Is CAN (Controller Area Network) compliant. This is an up-coming requirement and anything you purchase that will not comply with this new protocol will be dated and pretty much useless for some of today's models, as well as ALL models built for the 2008 model year.
