Like the judges say that a certain person isn't good enough...but would a certain singer thats been around for awhile, would they make it in today's music industry if they would just be starting out? Like not a lot of singers/if any sound like Rod Stewart or Tom Petty...would they have made it passed auditions?

No, I don't think so. People like Norah Jones or Sufjan Stevens, who've sold millions, wouldn't make it because America loves powerhouses. It's as if the standard is, "If you can be really loud, and hit crazy high notes, you're a singer."
Guys and gals from countless popular bands wouldn't cut it, either. Certain people have voices more suited for harmonizing. Or they are excellent musicians, and their voices go well with whatever they compose.
I still love Idol, though. Unique people like Fantasia and Chris Daughtry are great finds. :)

I think the question might be changed to ponder whether any of the Idol singers can actually make it today. So far, after how many years of American Idol, how many winners have had top flight careers in the music industry as a result. Other than Kelly Clarkson, I can't even name another winner. I think earning your career the hard way through countless gigs in small town bars does a lot more to make you prepared for a career in the industry than the sanitized top five cookie cutter of American Idol.
Think about the last five "new" bands that really knocked you on your a$$. Were any of them on American Idol? Or did they come by their fame the old fashioned way, hard work. Blood, guts and guitar strings.

Old bands like Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones are still around today because they did so well throughout the years. Sometimes you just can't put your finger on a classic until it happens. (Like Daughtry's band... he didn't make it all the way... but I think they'll be around for awhile.) But I really do wonder about some of the new artists. Shakira - I don't think she'd make it past the first audition if she tried. What I really get a kick out of is when they have "classic" artists on the show and they really don't do that well. We give them respect anyway because we know at some point they were great, and in most ways they still are! It's all about the name.

I think many older singers would make it at this period of time, but if the show started to do more poppy-punky music, it would be no good, because they are not that kind of artist. They are all very talented, but I think if they did their own songs it would be a bit unfair! *wink*
