Can anyone recommend some good CONTEMPORARY Chinese novels? I am particularly interested in ones dealing with the Cultural Revolution. (If a movie was made of it, I already know it ... To Live, Farewell My Concubine, etc.etc.)

P.S...
I mean novels translated from the Chinese, novels written by Chinese authors. .. not novels about China written by American/English authors...

Even though it isn't a novel, you might enjoy Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jian

For novels, try something by Bette Bao Lord (Spring Moon, for example)-- she's Chinese American. Her semi-autobiographical children's book, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, was wonderful-- told how she came to America and her adjustment.

But if you want something translated, try Soul Mountain
by Gao Xingjian. It is available in English. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature a few years back.

I'd like to recommend Qian Zhongshu's "Fortress Besieged" (Penguin Books 2005) translated into English by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao. It's readable, funny and understandable; Jung Chang, author of "Wild Swans", also commended, "This is my favorite novel; a highly amusing comedy of manners that conceals a powerful emotional charge." You'd love some great characters and know more on Chinese ways of life there.

I recommend "Chinese Cinderella", it's not translated from the chinese, instead, it's wriiten in english. BUT the author, Adeline Ma-Yan is a chinese and "Chinese Cinderella" is a story about an unwanted chinese girl, her mum died giving birth to her, her family consider her bad luck and te family members don't like her. i think this book really is a must-read!

I recommend you take a look at the books by Amy Tan. Her first novel, "The Joy Luck Club," is especially fine.
