I have rather limited space at work and I wanted to listen to music while I'm working, but unfortunately when I put the cd in the machine, the seconds of the song count up, but I don't hear anything. The speakers are on as well. Funny part is, I can hear alerts and error prompts. What to do?

Is the volume down or muted in the music player?

Depends on what program you're trying to listen to the cd with.
You'll have to make one your default player (eg. Windows Media).
Go into the program you're using and in the menu go to troubleshoot. It should ask in the menu somewhere to make this player the default for cds etc. Hope that helps.

make sure that the volume on the player is set up high enough then if that's good maybe try a different song or make sure that your audio is going directly to thatjack where the spekers are connected

fix sound settings on the application, since I have no idea what you're using to play this cd, I can't help with that

also go to control panel, sounds and speeches if you have win xp
and see if your drivers match your audio card

another one is to go to component and at windows audio, start the service

double click on Control panel.
double click on system icon
click on "hardware" tab.
click on "Device Manger"
scroll down the drop down menu
to Sounds.
put a check or x in open box.
hit "OK" on the way back out.
