I was curious - I was thinking of simply getting a rubbish bin with a foot pedal that controls the lid and some bin liners instead of spending money on a disposal unit (the ones that wrap the diapers up in that plastic wrap like stuff...)

Does anyone know if a normal bin keep the smell in just as well?

My mom got me diaper disposal bags at the Dollar Tree. They were only $1 for 100 bags. I have a medium sized garbage can in the nursery, with no lid at all. I just throw in the wet diapers, put the poopy ones in the disposal bags, and empty it about twice per week. There is no odor in the room at all, and it is SO much cheaper than those other ones. Don't waste your money on the Diaper Genie.......the thing still stinks, and they are SO expensive to refill.

May I suggest you get some Tea Tree Oil? It's the best diaper deodorizer I have found, and I've been using cloth diapers in a pop-top rubbish bin and disposables occasionally for travel. I just add a few drops in the water for the cloth diapers, and actually it sounds awful but when we're traveling I put a few drops on a wipe in the bottom of a bin liner and throw the disposables in that bag till we get where we're going.

Breastfeeding also helps keep the smell down, actually, the stools just sort of smell like buttermilk, not too bad. (Whereas I've smelt the formula stools - oy). Once weaning and true solids hits though then smell is definitely an issue. I tried baking soda and also borax it just wasn't doing the trick, then I got this tip off a cloth diaper site and it has worked like a charm. Incidentally some research also points to tea tree oil as being an antifungal/anti-yeast topical treatment, so maybe that has something to do with it keeping the smell down, I don't know. They even carry it at the big discount store here, in the beauty aid area, I think I pay about $6 for a bottle and a bottle lasts me roughly 2 months.

Yes...wrap it up in a plastic bag (grocery sack) and put in a closed container... same thing as a diaper disposal unit... and way cheaper!

If you have a Dollar Tree around you, they sell plastic diaper bags... kind of like a grocery bag (only smaller), they have a baby powder kind of smell (not over-powering though) and they work great. Put the dirty diaper in and tie it up... you'd never know there was a dirty stinky diaper - and they are only a buck... can't beat that. They are a great item to carry in the diaper bag... in case your out and changing a diaper.

You know, i had one of those diaper genie things and honestly, they are a WASTE of money. The bags get all twisted and when they are that small the diapers don't smell that bad anyway, esp. breastfed babies, and you go through way too many diapers to keep fighting with the dumb thing. and if you use a container with a lid that is always shut and keep the container clean (sprinkle some baking soda or powder in the bottom once in awhile) and use liners, it works just as well.

That will be just fine, I have had a diaper jenie and the thing was hard to change......I meen the liners were hard to change. Babies go through so many diapers any way. I would just change the bag every few days and make sure you wrap the diapers up tight.

It won't control the odor as well because everytime you open it you'll be exposing all the diapers in it to air. The diaper pails work by sealing the rest of the diapers off during the time you put a new one in. In my opinion, the best thing to do is put a trash can outside your front door for the diapers.

A diaper Geni is the only thing that did not smell for me, so good luck!!!!!!!!!!! I even began after a few months, just putting the diaper in a walmart bag and throwing them in outside garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am assuming you want to use throw away diapers! A diaper geni is fine for a newborn, but after a few months, throw them outside fast! Nothing will keep out the funk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that it would work just as well as long as you remember to empty it often and use plastic bags with an odour eater in it.
