I am sick of my children always complaining about school. I agree with them. What importance does things that happened so long ago, like who invaded who in the 16th century, have to do with life in the 21st century? In the real world, we need to prepare our children for the real life choices they have to make. How to support themselves. Work ethics. NOT getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant. How mush LIPA costs, and all of the things that will help them to survive. I know history and science is important also, but should not be the mainstay scholasticly. I am sad for our children. Anyone else feel this way?
PS why put kids all together in one place, tell them to be interested and pay attention to world war one, when bobby or jackie sitting next to them is oh so much more interesting!

I totally agree with you! I am 17 & actually just wrote an essay over this subject in english afew weeks ago. If teachers where to concentrate on real world everyday issues such as taxes, living on our own, how to raise a family, n stuff like that, instead of informing us about stupid S@%# like George Washington had a set of wooden teeth, alot more of us might actually be successful. Also if teachers where to concentrate more on what students wanted to do with their lives a few of us might actually be able to accomplish some goals n reach our dreams. I always wanted to be an artist & i am actually very talented at doing still life charcoal drawings... my teacher saw me drawing one day n let me kno that i was really good but i would never make it in the real world if i spent all my time working on my art... If all teachers act this way no one will ever reach they're dreams.... in my opinion the educational system has gone to hell

If people don't learn history, they'll repeat mistakes that have already been made in the past.

Reading, writing, history, science, biology, government, English. All necessary subjects that schools can teach.

Work ethics, preventing pregnancy, budgeting and so forth are all things that parents should be teaching. Nice to have health courses and home economics classes to reinforce these things, too. But these 2 classes are not the only things that kids should be learning.

How to support themselves. Work ethics. Not getting pregnant or impregnating another. Real life choices. Survival skills.... isn't this what a good parent teaches the child???

Hold schools accountable for math equations, science discovery, tactics during debate, civics and economics, life science, band, choir, organized team play, education through competition, Student Council activities, expression through art..... all of this is " crap" ????

they should teach more real life in school but knowing how to organize your thoughts , put them to paper, etc is important. part of it is to teach you how to learn, how to memorize, and develop your mind to think things through. actually helping students with their shortcomings in math , writing skills, communication is important. learning budgeting, basic home care, child care, options for careers, etc would be time well spent. nobody uses all the education they learned in schools whether it be in college or trade school. the educators try to give you a wide base of knowledge in the hope that you can build on that for your career. most countries have their kids in school longer hours and extra years than the united states. my idea is that if your grade point in school is a certain level you should be able to leave a little earlier than the kids that are struggling. they need extra help ; just like sports in high school - if you didnt have a certain grade point you were not able to be in the sports activity . but the schools just want to push you through

Wish my parents felt that way.
Still, for the most part, I think American school reflect American society. Most Americans aren't proficient in math or science, so they see no need to teach their kids that stuff, choosing instead to focus on the arts-history, English, music. Schools teach kids how to interact with society, but they do not give us the education that we need to be an asset to society or have a successful future.

Yea! I still can't figure out why all that required European history was about. I wanted to learn about electronics which was just kicking in back in the late 70's but it was an elective and not required to get a high school diploma. I had to drop it to concentrate on the required subjects to get a diploma to graduate high school. None of that stuff helped me in the real world. I think the electronics would have been more beneficial than White history, basic composition and P.O.D. =Principles Of Democracy.

Because the carp the you called is very Important. History is very important, whether you realized it or not, the history repeat it's self, and they're usually related.

what happened is affecting what's happening.

and that's why kids is very disrespectful of others culture because their parents don't encourage them and teach them the importance of school.
