Middle school was the worst place to be for all six of my children. If you weren't wearing the right brand of clothing, shoes, etc. you got laughed at. They hated all of the gossip that went on--and all of the drama--and fights.
The only thing they found positive was that you weren't stuck with just one teacher for the entire day. If they had a mean teacher, at least they only had to be in his/her room for around 40 minutes.
They liked high school much better than middle school. There, they could choose more of their own classes, transfer more easily if they found a teacher to be "difficult." They didn't need to see the same kids in every class they took, so got to meet a much wider variety of people. Also, no one cared what they wore in high school.

Bad things-Hormone hell, peer pressure to be ' in',
good things -discovering what you're good at sports wise or theatre wise , knowing that by grade ten some of the fellow kids will have actually matured and become nice people.
Making friends who are really your friends, winning recognition for sports or community spirit, writing , leadership

You learn about about people, and who your real friends are and make new ones.
There's more independence, and you have more responsibility-some people like that, some don't.
You aren't stuck in the same classroom for 6 hours a day.
You can choose an elective.
