Hello,

Your question if not dumb. For the first 6 to 8 weeks after a vasectomy, a man's ejaculate can still contain living sperm. So, to avoid pregnancy, you and your partner (assuming your partner is female) should still use a condom or other birth control device. After that time, your testicles will continue to produce sperm, but none will be contained in your semen. The term "semen" simply means the fluid you ejaculate. It contains many chemicals, proteins, water, other fluids, and, without a vasectomy, sperm. Once the vasectomy has "taken" and the living sperm have either died or been ejaculated, you will still ejaculate semen. It will simply be free of sperm.
One piece of advice. A successful vasectomy ONLY protects against unwanted pregnancy. It DOES NOT protect against giving or getting a sexually transmitted disease. So, if you're going to be sexually active with more than one faithful partner, you should still use a condom EVERY TIME you have sex to prevent STDs in you and your partner.
