The President that abolished drafts and started an all volunteer military force for the vietnam war was President Nixon.

The answer to your question "what is vietnamization" is: President Richard Nixon introduced his policy of "vietnamization". The plan was to encourage the South Vietnamese to take more responsibility

The BIG STINK happened during the Vietnamese war. I'ts a large subject, but I'll try to condense. Problem was with the draft. If you were smart enough or rich enough you could probably get out of serving in the military. This left the uneducated and the poor as "cannon fodder". President Nixon was our leader then. The war was characterized much like Iraq is today. There was a lot of hostility about why we were there in the first place. Snipers, military disguised as civilians--you didn't know who the enemy was. It was, and is a non-winnable war. There are several "today" people who are Vietnam vets: McCain, Kerry et al. Out on a limb here, but I think "Vietnamization" means an unwinnable war, in that Iraq is in the same condition that Viet Nam was then. If you are interviewing a soldier who served in Nam, ask about his experiences there. Ask his opinions on the Iraq war. Ask open ended questions--How did that affect you? What is your opinion on Iraq? Do you think our National Guard is spread too thin. What would you do if you were in charge? Since we have an all volunteer army, why did you enlist? The over-arching topic is the comparison between Vietnam and Iraq.

I'd send you a bunch of places to research if it weren't going to be tomorrow. Good luck. (wilkeelna@yahoo.com)
