The purpose of a router is to get the packet one hop closer to the destination and in the right direction. They are responsible for sending and receiving the packets to/from one computer to another.

If you think of the post office as a system, the router would be the guy who sorts the mail into different zip codes to be delivered to the right geographical location. A packet may go through many routers on its way to the destination, the same way a package may go through many different substations in the post office until it reaches its destination. At each step in the post office analogy, the package gets one step closer to the destination until it's delivered to the recipients mailbox or address.

Basically it's a device that reads every incoming packet and redirects it to the correct next hop. You can buy a cheap router for home usage, usually to split up a broadband internet connection or to create a small home network. You can also buy really expensive routers to create a bigger Local Area Network for a buiness or school for example.

A router is a computer networking device that forwards data packets across an internetwork toward their destinations, through a process known as routing. Routing occurs at layer 3 (the Network layer e.g. IP) of the OSI seven-layer protocol stack
