Protect Japan, prevent a resurgence of Japanese militarism, Asian stability, South Korean trading partner. On the other hand, the South Koreans are becoming anti-American to an absurd degree, saying Great Leader Kim's not such a bad guy at all, so maybe we ought to pull out and see how they like starving under a Stalinist regime. It might be worth it just to say "told you so!"

To keep an eye on Russia and China. The US troops stationed in Japan can not take actions alone without consulting with the Japanese government. Instead of putting all your eggs in the hands of Japan, you must keep your troops stationed in S Korea. In case Japan turns its back at you, you can still rely on Korea for support. Without their support, how can you watch Russia and China.
