You grow up and mature. Not easy for a young person. Easier for a mature person that understands that some people are users and you don't owe them your personal time.

If you have a big heart and you can't say no to people, it is hard to do, but you need to know that there are people who just like taking advantage of you. Some times you have to say no to them especially when they ask you to do something at the last minute without notice even.

You shouldn't feel bad when saying no. You didn't do anything wrong. But, your priorities like family etc...should come first before anyone else.

Think about how things would be if you would have said yes. By saying no to someone you don't really want is a lot better than saying yes just to be nice because then you are just leading someone on into a dead end, which is the worst thing.

Don't think of it as saying no. By refusing a request your helping some1 push themselves to find a resolutions to what ever their problem is by themselves and therefore giving them a sense of Independence.
