I was at the pool the other day and someone in the change room was covering herself with baby oil before going to the pool. Why would someone do this, and wouldnt that harm the other swimmers, wouldnt it wash off anyway in the clorine? This is the first time I ever saw anyone do this.

It will reduce drag until it washes off. This inconsiderate twit will leave an oil slick that will cling to the sides of the pool. Report the dumba-ss the next time you see her doing that.

Another reason she might be doing it is to put a protective layer between her skin and the harmful chlorine they use to keep the pool clean. I agree it will make a mess of the water, but it might be more effective than other protective lotions since oil is hydrophobic and any oil that is in her pores will keep the chlorine out. Baby oil is a good skin protectant and moisturizer. It will magnify the sun's effects, though. Many people used to use it to tan and it will increase your exposure but is dangerous because it does not provide UV proctection and UV is what causes cancer.

She was probably trying to tan, not swim. It would be very bad for the water. You do not want anyone in the pool with you who is using oils or lotions before swimming. Makes the deck slippery and dangerous too.

I don't think it will harm the other swimmers. It's only going to harm the person applying it, because if the sun is blazing, that person is going to get baked. That's the dumbest thing to apply in the sun.
