When I go to a restaurant, more often than not I notice that I will get one more than the number of people at the table. (for instance 3 pieces of bread for 2 people) Any reason why?

There is always more bread available - the point is to give enough for everyone to have a piece. The extra piece is like a signal to a good waiter that you need more bread. If the restaurant gives enough for everyone to have 2 pieces, and everyone only wants one, they run into a lot of wasted bread. This is especially true if the bread is served hot, like at the Olive Garden. There it is actually in the training to give one piece for everyone, plus one extra the first time bread is offered. It's because the bread there is so much better when it's hot!

The waiters like to watch people as they argue over the last piece.
