A Sociology degree can actually get you a job working for the city, county, state, and federal government working on statistics and public relations and health care and you can even go into criminal justice if you want to go into law enforcement. You can also teach and if you add a master's you can actually go into counseling. My advice to you is to network yourself well because that's the key to getting the best paying job and it's all in who you know so develop those networking skills in college and do internships that's how many college students land their first real job outside of college.

Great question. Many sociologists wind up being social workers because Sociolgy is still a field where the public gets confused.

I worked for a University based research center doing program evaluations and teaching. It requires good quantative skills and an MA. So research and evaluation is one real world field that sociologist can own eventually.

Teaching seems to be what a lot of my grad cohort went into, but really any job that requires a MSW or MPA can accommodated by sociologists.

Research skills will make a huge difference between being a case manager or doing some real sociological work. Private firms, such as Rand or ORC, pay well for applied sociologists.

I need to be honest though; it is hard to get a true sociology job unless you get in with a University based research center. Otherwise, data entry clerks, marketing,. public relations, data analysts, grant writing, consulting, and administrative/research assistants are alternatives. I worked for a Center for 10 years and recently left. It is hard to find a job listed as "sociologist" so I generally go with other descriptions such as Reserch Analyst or Applied Social Researchers.

The hot spot for this kind of stuff is in Washington DC or your state capital, as they value science to service.

Other sociologists I know: a few who became cops, probation officers, social workers, case managers, city planning, confilct counselors, mediators, correctional officers, educator, and applied researchers.

It is a fun degree to get, but emphasize your classes in tangible fields like mediation or if you want to do clinical work focus on clinical sociology.

Try to do well, so you get a good ride to a MA program. It opens up your real world opportunities tenfold.
