He could be reacting to the light in the heater (if it has one) or to an electrical field that the heater is producing. Other possibilities include things like his reflection in the heater, but really it's practically impossible to tell honestly. As long as the temperature isn't over about 90F he's ok. Temperature close to 80F is best though, but in any case that isn't going to cause him to flare at the heater. He will probably stop before long, sometimes fish just do goofy stuff that we can't explain.

he might see his reflection in the heater? Whats the temp in the tank? they can live in 80-85 degree water.

sounds like he has decided your heater is a hot babe. bettas will often pick something in their tank and make it their new love -- i have one that wraps himself around his filter -- i don't even use the filter because his fins were getting shredded in it. others pic plants rocks -- you name it. men in solitary do desperate things. he is just in love -- no worries unless you want to get him a psychiatrist.
