Generally in large tanks bettas will only fight with other bettas ( both male, and female) They are territorial which tend to mean in a small tank of 5 gallons or less they may consider the whole tank their territory. Most peaceful fish which don't look like bettas, or are slow moving will be okay. Often bettas are fin nipped by other fish like large tetras, and barbs.

I am going dispel all this other stuff that the other people are saying. I have had fish for nearly 20 years. I have had no problems with putting bettas with other fish. Though I do caution you with fish that tend to nip, and/or are aggressive. Now the aggressive with make the the betta fight so yes do not put them with say an angel or a chiclid. The nipping fish are guppies, goldfish, and most of your barbs. If the fish are peaceful such as cory cats, pleco's, and most live bearers then it will be fine. The common misconception of first time owners is that bettas are vicious but, they aren't at all. They just have a bad rep because yes they will fight with the males of their species and even this I have found has exceptions. I once had two males together, so you may place them with other fish.

No, you can put a Male Betta fish in an aquarium with other fish. You must first make sure a couple of things though.

One, no other fish in the tank can look like another male Betta...Male fancy guppies, long fin tetras, fancy goldfish etc.

Second, bettas are very slow moving relative to most fish that have much shorter fins not slowing them down. This makes bettas the target in a community tank. Barbs are some of the worst at harassing and killing long finned fish, as are some mollies and platties.

Lastly, make sure your aquarium does not have strong water movement in it if you want to put a Betta in. They prefer calm areas and if subjected to too strong of water movement, they will be forced to swim constantly and tire out and eventually die.

If you think you have all three covered, you can try. Just be prepared that he may have to go back in a bowl or smaller aquarium on his own

Hope this helps! Good luck.

I have raised bettas for 8 years now.

From previous reports, I generally had a beta in a community tank with out issues in any respect. He replaced into happy and there replaced into under no circumstances any battling. despite the fact that, i replaced into breeding guppies for a on a similar time as and the literature i examine on them is so which you are able to under no circumstances place a beta in a similar tank as guppies becuase the flamboyant tail guppies can look too very like the beta and the beta will attack. I under no circumstances examined this theory through fact i admire my fish. in a universal community tank with goldfish, tetras, etc.. i will very nearly promise it's going to be great through fact I under no circumstances had a concern.

there are numerous fish that you can keep with a betta. Some of them have already been named but here's a little list for you.

cory catfish
small tetras (neons, glowlights, black neons, cardinals)
platy
pleco
cherry barb
otocinclus
african dwarf frog

things to definitely stay away from
tiger barb( will nip the betta)
fish of the same/close color to the betta(betta will chase it)
guppies(bettas will attack because of the guppies' big tail)
angelfish
other aggressive cichlids that are bigger than the betta
larger tetras may be nippy as well

Yes, that is true with male beta fish. Although with female beta fish you can put them in an aquarium with other fish. If you are planning to place beta fish with other fish you must get FEMALE beta fish, NOT males. Hope I helped!

Bettas live peacefully with any other peaceful community fish. Tetras may nip their fins, they may attack guppies and other flashy-finned fish, but it all depends on the betta itself.

Males cannot live with other male bettas, or females. Females can live together peacefully.

Please don't believe the 'bettas are vicious killers' rumors. They are great community fish, and they appreciate the company and space, in my opinion.

You shouldn't. They can be aggressive to any long finned fish and they can also be the ones picked on by larger fish. They are weak swimmers. Keep them alone is better.
