Is it like living in student accomodation, where you see ads for 'house mate wanted in house of five- non smoker preferred' etc etc?

It can have two meanings so you'd have to clarify with the landlord. It could be like a flat share, where people are getting together and sharing space and everyone decides if a new flatmate comes in and who it is. Or, it could be a house with several bedrooms and you are renting a room and sharing the rest of the house, but the landlord decides who rents each room with no input from you.

House-share is the term used for sharing an entire house with a couple of strangers to minimize the cost of rent. It can be you have your own room but share the kitchen, bathroom, living room with others.
