My sister had 2 hamsters - they mated, had several babies. Eventually the mother ended up eating one of the babies - I've heard of this happening before....buuut: she just found the "kid" hamsters eating the mother's head! Why would the 'kids' eat the mother??? I've never heard of this before..

This is not a joke either; I am serious...I know it's disgusting but it happened and I have no clue why. And my sister didn't mistake eating for playing - there was blood, etc...the mother is definitely dead.

Wow, that is something that is not common. This might of happened because you are supposed to remove the babies after they are a couple weeks old. The mother ussually eats the babies and not the other way around. Sorry that you lost the mother but that baby must have issues.

If the mother was sick the babies would eat it alive, but you could of mistaken them for eating the mom when they were trying to get the mom to playing with, trying to eat milk or something.

That is weird and disgusting and I have never heard of that happening before you may want to talk to a vet and see if he/she can tell you why they did that and if it is normal.
