Perhaps it seems a little weird in this country, but in German speaking countries it's no more than a nickname for Margaret (Margarete or Margarethe, and usually spelled Gretl), just as Hansel is a nickname for John (Hans).

I can empathize, though, with your wondering--I'm sure you and your brother do get some strange reactions to your names. Just explain that your mother liked the names in the fairy tale and shrug it off.

If it's a real problem for you, cheer up--you can always change it when you're of legal age.

By themselves, neither one should raise an eyebrow -especially in Scandinavian countries. It's only when the two are put together that people tend to make the fairy-tail connection. You could spend hours, actually, coming up with name combinations that'd turn heads for a brother and sister... Bonnie & Clyde, George & Martha, Mary & Joseph, Adam & Eve, etc. It could be worse though. At least your last name isn't Gingerbread (IS it?)!

Well...I suppose it isn't, when you're living in olden-days Germany...It may be kinda weird nowadays, though it's all a matter of taste.

And if we're talking about the fairy tale, then I'd say the weirder part was that the father actually felt he needed to abandon his children in the woods, just because his wife told him to. And that the oddly-named children didn't hold it against him.

Put it this way, it's not at the top of my list of names for my daughter. And, now that you mention it, neither is Hansel for my son.

Do you actually know of a Hansel and Gretel?

No, I don't think it's weird. Just a form of Margaret.
And Hansel is just a form of John.

I knew a dachshund that's name was Gretel. I'm don't know any people with that name. I'd change it! What was your mother thinking.

No...Its your child...Just try and think how they will be treated when they get older and in school...If you really like the name give them a middle(second) name that they can go by if they so choose...
