While the umbilical cord stump is still there, you should only give baby a sponge bath so it doesn't get wet. When it falls off, then you can give baby a bath in an infant tub. You should be very careful with baby around water - always have EVERTHING you need for the bath within reach before you begin. If you take a birth class, they may show you how to care for a newborn as part of the class. If not, then ask the doctor or nurse while you are in the hospital after giving birth to show you how to bathe baby safely :)

First off you dont bath the baby till after the cord comes off. You are to wipe it with alcohol wipes 2x a day at diaper change. Once it falls off put a dab of A&D ointment on it to help it if it bleeds. You will then just sponge bath your baby on a towel with a little bowl of warm soapy water keeping the parts not being washed covered so he/she doesnt get cold. After doing that for the first several weeks you will then be able to place your baby in the bath. I used a baby bath tub so I could make sure the water wasnt too hot. Hope that helps. Congrats and GL

Congrats! Well, I'm 32 weeks and this is my first as well- and my fiance and I are away from fam too. I asked my sister this question just last night- she says that we are not to put the baby in the tub until the umbilical cord falls off and its closed completely... so we basically give the baby a spongebath.

Babies are slippery when wet. I always used one of those baby bathtubs that the baby lies in and its head is held above water. The water needs to be a little warm ( can test with the elbow or inside of wrist.) Place the tub on the floor to do this and you can place a towel underneath to catch water. Use a mild, unscented baby soap. And don't forget to wash the head because liquid from their bottle always runs behind their ears and into their hair. They spit up and that gets into the hair too. Dry the baby completely BEFORE you stand up. I'm telling you they can be just like little greased pigs. Dress them quickly to prevent a chill in winter or if air conditoner is on.Use something like baby magic to keep them soft. Enjoy the sweet smelling baby!

When you have a baby, the nurse teaches you how to care for the umbilical cord and bathe your baby before you leave the hospital, any questions or concerns after that just discuss with them before you leave. Don't worry most of it comes naturally. Good luck

First u put the baby on towels on your bed and fix lukewarm
water in a dishpan or bowl. Test temp. of water with your wrist.
Just be gentle and wash the baby down and then change water to rinse water, to wash hair, use a cup to rinse babys hair or just use the washclothes.
After bath , warm baby oil or baby lotion and put on baby.
After baby is dry, dress baby, wrap in blanket.

It goes through step by step on how to. Usually for the first few weeks a sponge bath is fine. The nurses at the hospital will also show you how.

Depending on how big your baby is and how your house is, I bathed my son at first in the kitchen sink. After he got to big for that, I bought a baby bathtub that had an insert in it that raised him up.
