Since you already have the crossover cable, you're halfway there. You obviously need to connect the crossover cable to both network cards in PC A and laptop B. Afterwards, you need to configure Internet Connection Sharing in your PC. Follow the instructions on the following link for the Operating systems where you have your broadband or analog connection to share the Internet connection with the other computer. It's a painless process.

Hope this helps,

If you're sure that it's a cross-over cable, you simply plug it into both of the LAN ports, and enable file sharing between both computers. If, however, your current modem is connected to your desktop via the LAN port, you will need to either purchase another LAN card or change your modem to a USB connection.

I know that your question says "without using any type of hubs or switches or routers" but I have little doubt that this would be the easiest option. If you stick with the idea of both the desktop and the laptop being able to use the internet, and not using a router, you'll find that you have to leave your desktop switched on in order for your laptop to connect to the internet.

This works for 2 PCs talking to each other, but you might consider getting a router or better still a router modem.
They are very cheap on Ebay - many people sell wired routers and upgrade to wireless router modems.

With the router you also get a firewall, and can plug in a 3rd or 4th PC.

Example router modem - Netgear dg834

If you use the crossover cable, and one PC has a USB DSL modem (or dial up modem) it may not be possible for the 2nd PC to share the internet connection.

if you want to have the two systems linked, plug the crossover cable into each of the pc's lan port. make sure you have the lan connection of each pc enabled. you can either put in your own address, or just leave it on the dhcp setting, windows will have each pc generate a 169.254 address that will be unique and can be used to communicate between each pc. then make sure each pc has the share files and print attribute turned on in the control panel . then you can push and pull files between the shared folders on each machine. no nead for routers, or internet connections ect. plain and simple. all the other stuff is nice if you need to access other computers or get out on the internet, your question did not bring that up

firstly you need to network the pc's if you can do this with your curent pc and cable and sing the network setup wizzard then you may need a straight RJ45 rather than a crossover.

search for network forums on the internet for more specific advice and step by step instruction.

Wireless is better though!!!!!

I have shared a dial up internet connection via a hardwired network but it wasnt ideal.

secure practices - for sure. it must be the person debts you're using, examine the passwords for the shares heavily. I generally discover this is extra trouble-free to create comparable debts/passwords on each and each gadget, for use for record sharing in simple terms. XP likes it so a lot extra effectual if it thinks it fairly is the "comparable" guy or woman at each and each end of the sharing factors. From an administrator account, you are able to attempt to hook up with the C$ share on the different gadget. If that works, however the shares do no longer, then the secure practices on the proportion might have some blunders in it. additionally, for domicile windows sharing, wait, then wait some extra. it consistently takes domicile windows numerous minutes to work out all shares from their community browse grasp...
