you need pretty much knowledge of CPU technology to understand the differences of processor cores. i try to keep it as simple as possible:
the Pentium 4 and the Pentium M are very different CPUs. the P4 is based on an older technology and Intel increased its performance over time by reducing the process structure and increasing the clock speed (top speed is 3.8GHz) and the L2 cache memory.
the Pentium M consists of a more sophisticated technology so it can reach the same performance as the P4 at a far lower clock speed (top speed is 2.33GHz). with the introduction of the Pentium M, Intel also introduced a new notebook platform called Centrino. Like many people believe, Centrino isn't a processor, Centrino is a notebook technology. It consists of 3 parts of a notebook - the processor, the chipset and the wireless adapter. this technology was intended to save power for a longer battery life and preventing from overheating by automatically reducing the clock speed in case the CPU hasn't to do a lot (this is called Intel speedstep technology).

a comparison between them:
the Pentium M 780 (top model, clocked at 2.33GHz) has the same performance as a P4 clocked at 3.4GHz. only the two top models of the P4 (the P4 3.6GHz and the P4 3.8GHz) are slightly faster, but they were horribly expensive. both generations, P4 and Pentium M are discontinued now.

and btw, the Pentium M (code name Dothan) is the father of the Core Solo/Duo processor (code name Yonah) and this is the father of the Core 2 Duo processors (code name Conroe & Merom).

The Pentium M uses more efficient technology so it will be faster than a Pentium 4 with equal clock speeds. The big difference is that the Pentium M is for laptops as another poster mentioned. They are designed to run cooler and slow down when you are not using them. How does this help? CPUs that overheat, and P4s overheat alot, cause freezing, lagging, and crashes. The Pentium M running at lower temps will have less problems.

A Pentium M process is a Pentium 4 processor. It is just shaped differently to make it fit in the smaller space of a laptop. The M stands for "mobile" as in laptop. So the speed of the two would be identical.

No really it depends on the ram but the pentium m is much more updated and newer than the pentium 4 good luck

a pentium M is a VERY efficent processor and yeah it will outperform a pentium 4 if they are they same speeds. although i think it is unlikely you will find a pentium M with the same speed as a p4

depends on the amount of L1 and L2 cache built on the cpus. and if one is dual core vs single core.
