How do russian tortoises have sex?

When the tortoises are sexually mature (about 4-6 years old usually), the male will do a courtship ritual. If the female is recepetive, she will respond in a certain way.

The male will climb on top and hook his tail over the back edge of the female's shell, and try to line up their cloaca- the vent openings they use for many things, including reproduction.

The male will mount the female (which can take a while) and wrap his tail with hers. He will also stick his back feet inside her shell. Often after mine were done mating (or at least when the female was done) she would take off and Spot, my male, would fall off but still have his feet stuck in her shell! She would drag him around for a while (not sure if she was doing it on purpose?!)

For most tortois sexing, males underside have an concave feel to it... Females are flat.

The reason for the concavity is that the males will mount on top of the females.

women everybody is greater than adult males as adults. women people have greater area between the scutes (sections) of the shell above the tail to permit breeding. adult males have scutes above the tail that curve down greater and have much less of an "beginning". maximum puppy shops won't have the skill to provide help to! a reptile vet can try blood to make sure.
