w^2 - 2w +1 + 2w - 5 + w^2

collect like terms

2w^2 - 4

factor out a 2

2(w^2 - 2)

First, get rid of the brackets:
w^2- 2w + 1 + 2w - 5 + w^2

Combine like terms:
2w^2 - 4

Factor out the greatest common factor:
2(w^2 - 2)
