Idiot. No, if you're applying for a job, it's basically a try out, who ever is the best wins/gets the job.

Absolutely not. It just means you've put your name in with the hundreds or even thousands of other people vying for it. Read Mark Granovetter's "Getting a Job" for huge revelations on what really goes on when people apply for a job. It's an excellent book!
