...The Pogues 'The band played Waltzing Matilda'? I like Shane McGowan's style but is there anyone similar?

I love songs as simple as, and with the tempo, of that above; also songs that cover an 'epic' theme, or tell a story, or cover war stories or old yarns (like modern Irish folk).

What can you recommend, moving away from the Pogues' style but still related? Thanks!

Have you tried Kirsty MacColl? She was one of the best lyricists in the UK until she was cruelly taken off this mortal coil. Her songs where simple, but brimming with melodies. Her lyrics are wise and insightful. You should try "Galoroe - Her Greatest Hits", and if you like what you hear you should invest in her back catalogue (Recently reissued) - My favourite being "Kite" Additionally The Smiths where / are the greatest band ever, again very witty and insightful lyrics by Morrisey .

The Kinks deal with epic themes on many of their '60s classics.

The best records: Face to Face, Something Else by the Kinks, The Village Green Preservation Society, and Arther Or the Rise and Fall of the British Empire.

The kinks were geniuses and very underrated/overlooked. Find out more about these great albums at www.AllMusic.com. You won't be disappointed!

'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' was written by a chap called Eric Bogle - it's been covered by many people other than The Pogues.
Another of Eric's songs covered by many is 'No-Man's Land' (sometimes called 'Flowers of the Forest' or 'Willie McBride')

If you can, I'd advise listening to both of these songs performed by the writer....
