I'm 39 weeks pregnant, the doc said my cervix is soft but the baby is not yet in postition. Are there any exercises or postitions I could do to get into to help things along? Thanks!

That depends on what interests you and what your doctor advises. Many women enjoy dancing, swimming, water aerobics, yoga, pilates, biking, or walking. Swimming is especially appealing, as it gives you welcome buoyancy (floatability or the feeling of weightlessness). Try for a combination of cardio (aerobic), strength, and flexibility exercises, and avoid bouncing.

Many experts recommend walking. It's easy to vary the pace, add hills, and add distance. If you're just starting, begin with a moderately brisk pace for a mile, 3 days a week. Add a couple of minutes every week, pick up the pace a bit, and eventually add hills to your route. Whether you're a pro or a novice, go slowly for the first 5 minutes to warm up and use the last 5 minutes to cool down.

Whatever type of exercise you and your doctor decide on, the key is to listen to your body's warnings. Many women, for example, become dizzy early in their pregnancy, and as the baby grows, their center of gravity changes. So it may be easy for you to lose your balance, especially in the last trimester.

Your energy level may also vary greatly from day to day. And as your baby grows and pushes up on your lungs, you'll notice a decreased ability to breathe in more air (and the oxygen it contains) when you exercise. If your body says, "Stop!" - stop!

Your body is signaling that it's had enough if you feel:

fatigue
dizziness
heart palpitations (your heart pounding in your chest)
shortness of breath
pain in your back or pelvis
And if you can't talk while you're exercising, you're doing it too strenuously. You should also keep your heart rate below 160 beats per minute.

It also isn't good for your baby if you become overheated because temperatures greater than 102.6 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) could cause problems with the developing fetus - especially in the first trimester - which can potentially lead to birth defects. So don't overdo exercise on hot days.

When the weather is hot, try to avoid exercising outside during the hottest part of the day (from about 10 AM to 3 PM) or exercise in an air-conditioned place. Also remember that swimming makes it more difficult for you to notice your body heating up because the water makes you feel cooler

Does your doctor mean that your baby is not "engaged", or does he mean that your baby is faced a different way eg/ breech? Engaged means that the head is down and secured into the pelvis. Breech is when the feet are coming out first, instead of the head. Engagement usually takes place about 2-4 weeks before the due date in first time moms, or at the onset of labour in moms who have already children. However, there are exceptions to the rule. If you're a first time mom the head might engage just as labour is starting. If you're not engaged, I would just walk a lot. If the baby is breech, get on all fours--wash the floor, watch t.v on all fours, read on all fours. This position also gets the baby in a perfect position for birth and makes birthing a lot easier. So get on all fours and get that baby where he/she is suppose to go! Good luck! Michelle

I agree with you.. but you know as well as I do there are some people in the world that always have to put in their "views on life" and what is considered right and wrong... The person who was asking the question may or may not have someone in their life that is okay with telling the person it's okay to wait. So while it may not be helpful to everyone, it might help some kid from making a mistake. .. ...

No, you can't do any exercises or 'positions' to get the baby 'into position' ... I know that by now you are 'sick and tired of being fat and waddling' but you could have up to three more weeks of pregnancy to go ... and don't 'worry' about the baby, because it will get into the right 'position' in time, or the doctor will know and be able to 'move it' before you have the baby, or do a 'caesarian section' ... just relax and enjoy it, because you are not going to have much time to 'relax' after that baby comes.

Doing squats... sitting on an exercise ball and rolling and bouncing... walking...
Sometimes they just don't go into position (mine didn't). Prepare yourself mentally for a c-section. And make sure you have someone to help you out for a few weeks after, if you do end up having a c-section.
