Off is NOT better if its turning off after 5 minutes! It eats more current constantly turning it on and off! If you have a CRT display, use a screensaver. It also puts a strain on the Hi voltage circuit in your monitor if its a CRT!

I prefer using the screen saver i only turned off the monitor in case that i will not back at the office or i'll leave it for long...e.g. 3 hours or 5 hours.

I leave my computer on, but turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away for a couple of hours. The monitor pulls more than twice the power of the CPU, and eventually it will burn out your screen. I tried to tell a friend that, but her husband insisted it wouldn't happen. So what happened? One day her monitor literally blew up. Then he had to buy her a new (bigger & better) one.

It depends how long after the monitor turns off you turn it back on. If it is on screensaver and you come back after a minute- no harm. But if it turns off and you come back straight away, the monitor has to reboot straight away and that causes a lot of light usage. The more light a monitor shines, the quicker it will burn out.

My recomendation is to have the screensaver come on after 5 and then set the monitor to go off after 10 and if you want, set the compute to go into standby or hibernation, or sleep if you hav a mac.

Turn it off. Screen savers are pretty useless these days.

only turn off the computer if you are not going to use it for more than a day or two, other wise if you use it daily then keep it on and just use sleep
