Yes, you can have too many snails. Snails are living animals and as such "use up" some of the tanks capacity or bioload. Too many snails can cause the same problems as too many fish; namely elevated ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels that are very harmful to fish.

You got some great answers. Snails are not bad but if you have a lot its probably due to overfeeding.

I felt compelled to tell you NOT to squish the snails with your fingers. Besides the fact that its cruel its dangerous. A shell can cut your finger and introuduce a NASTY NECROTISING (sp?) bacterial infection. If you must squish, don't use your hands! But please don't squish, its mean.

To remove some snails add a piece of lettuce, weight it with a rock of need be. Wait till about 3 or 4 am and then go flick on the lights and you will find the lettuce covered in snails, just pull out the whole thing. If you must dispose of them you can freeze them but don't throw them outside where they can wreck the eco system.

Yes and no. Too many snails can reak havock on a 20 gallon and they just keep reproducing! Snails do not eat fish poop, that is a myth.

If you want to rid your tank of some of them before they get way out of control, weigh down a piece of lettuce on the bottom. The next morning it will be covered, just remove them.

Yes it is bad to have too many snails.
Snails are known to eat the alge on the side of the tank or bowl so the best place to keep them is in very dirty bowls.
[Naturally dirty]
They also like sea weed and such. Be warned, fish LOVE seaweed and will finish it off faster than the snails.
Never let your snail starve. They also feed on leftover flakes that your fish hasn't eaten.

And as the top person said.
you do NOT crush the snails that is animal cruelty.
when they die they will naturally come out and the fish will eat it if it's not too big.

Do you know what kind of snails they are? Did you introduce live plants?
There are a number of fish that will consume certain snails, but not all of them, and certain snails are beneficial to the substrate (MTS - Malaysian Trumpet Snails).

One common reason for them sticking around is overfeeding. Try cutting back and/or try a loach (NOT A CLOWN LOACH - Much too large) or two if you aren't overstocked in that 20g.

positioned some lettuce on the backside of the tank formerly you flow to mattress at nighttime, interior the morning, there will be a gaggle of snails on the lettuce so which you would be able to easily pull it out of the tank and toss it. It won't do away with snails thoroughly notwithstanding it is going to help save them below administration.

well it depends lol if u have fish that eat them then its alright but remember they are asexual that means they dont need a mate to get pregnant and pretty soon your fishes if u have them will go crazy and feel crowded and the snails will probably take over

certainly not.. baby snails make great food for the fish, especially if you squish them on the side of the tank to crack the shell
