i was asked by a pregnant friend if smoking during pregnancy can cause morning sickness. after my lecture on not smoking during pregnancy anyway, she still wanted to know, and i didn't have an answer for her. does anyone know if it actually is related? i don't need the other downsides to smoking, i have already shared them all with her. please back up your answer with actual facts.

Smoking has nothing to do with morning sickness. I'm a non-smoker and suffered from severe morning sickness. Morning sickness is caused by the hormones of pregnancy.

people get so puritanical about smoking in pregnancy. women have been doing it for centuries and babies are born bloody fine! i smoked the whole way thru with my son, he was over 8lbs, on time, and has never been sick a day in his life. he above average weight, strong, alert and did not suffer any side effects. was this lucky? if so then it is for all my smoking friends that have children and also have fine children. the reason i am saying this is not to stir up controversy, but to point out that it is not your place to lecture your friend. give her support and encouragement, but dont lecture - that leads to more smoking thru stress. my family used to congratulate me and encourage me to get to as few cigs a day as i could, this was so helpful and what i needed. lectures made me think - f*** you and want a cig. addiction is individual to each person, some people find it near impossible for different reasons. others find it really easy. your friend does not need the extra stress. the docs will tell her if there is a problem. to answer ure question tho - i just get passionate - is that yes, smoking always made me feel more nauseous if i was already sick. if i was not sick then it made no difference. smoking does not cause morning sickness, but it can make it worse.

I don't know about actual facts...but for me personally (I was a smoker and quit when I got pregnant) the smell of smoke made me sick...so it doesn't surprise me that your friend thinks that smoking causes morning sickness...I know a lot of women that become sick either from smoking or smelling the smoke when pregnant. But smoking isn't the sole reason for morning sickness though...but I think it can affect it.

Well if she smoked before... then yes, it may cause morning sickness, becuase ya know... when you're pregnant you're just irritant and a grouch most of the time... so any unpleasant smell (like smoke...) could make her sick, even if she smoked before. That's good that you lectured her... she needs it. I won't say anymore, it seems you know most of it!! =] good luck!

If it didnt make her sick before, i wouldnt imagine they were linked.

However, your body has a way of telling u what it needs and dont need. If she is getting sick after smoking a cig.....its probably her body telling her "Hey, u need to put that out. U got some baby making to do."

It's not because of smoking. It's probably because there are 26 additional hormones in a woman's body when she is pregnant. Please, tell her for the benefit of her, and the baby, QUIT SMOKING.

tell her is causes horrible sickness, because apparently she is more concerned about herself than her child...how selfish.
