1) make sure everything's plugged in
1a) also make sure nothing's plugged into the front headphone jack as sometimes that turns off the back one.
2) make sure the volume isn't down or muted (there's a lot of places where this could happen, from the speakers to windows itself to special software that came with the soundcard to the app you're playing audio in)
3) if all that fails, reinstall the drivers
3a) they should be on the one of discs that came with your dell... you saved those right?
3b) if you can't find the discs check dell's website for downloads or ordering a disc
3c) you can also check your sound card manufacturer's page for drivers

Uninstall any, and all Sound Software and drivers.
Reboot the PC
If the sound card is PCI, then turn of the computer and use a different PCI slot.
Restart the computer.
Install the software and drivers MANUALLY from the original disk, or download files, from the manufacture's website.
If that doesn't work, then replace the existing drivers manually from the original disk.

go to Windows Update http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
They have all the drivers that have been released by your sound card maker. Go and click on Find Driver Updates then your sound card maker and also check what update is compatible. Try also double clicking on the speaker volume button it will give you the settings of all your volumes it might be something is muted. Also go to the dell forums and sign up some many people can answer your questions and it is free. http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=dim_audio

if its your speakers that isnt working make sure your sound devices are plugged in. open your computer and see if you have a sound card it should be a card with green pink and yellow plugs on the back. touch something metal like the inside of your case and then remove the sound card. put the sound card back and then plug in the speakers or whatever sound output your using. if this doesnt work try plugging in your sound card into another computer to see if it works.

Find the name of the graphic card, go here, register for free account, and put the name in the search bar, and download the driver for the sound card, and install it.. Problem Solved.

Get a Mac...they are better then Windows. But serisouly, it might be the plug from your speakers to the back of your tower...I had that issue once and you might be best off just buying new speakers. Sorry

did you recently move your computer? did you hit it or anything... it might simply be that your sound card... if you have one came loose. If it is onboard sound...well did you plug something in too hard? you also might have a virus that is attacking your dirvers what model do you have.
