Well the Italians are number one based on making the best car design. If you have heard about Pininfarina car studio you would know that all car manufactures go to them to design some of their cars. I have had an opportunity to own many cars and frankly all car manufactures have their good and bad cars. I believe that American large SUVs are the best especially GM. For small compact cars I would say that Japanese are very good. If you demand a lot of electronics and innovation in your car German car makers are the best but they are the least reliable ones. Not all the time the more expensive car is better than the cheaper one. I am not an American but I love this country and I live here and I will spend all my money for a car that is made in this country because I am strong believer that my money should support American families.

Design, meaning dependable, long lasting and reliable would have to go to USA and Japan. Design, meaning drop-dead good looks and great handling goes to Italy and Germany. If the US automakers would ever realize that the buying public would love to have vehicles that don't resemble jellybeans or packing crates it would be a beautiful world. Afterall, it doesn't cost anymore to build a Ford 500 that looks like an Aston Martin than a, well, Ford 500.

The Japanese are doing a pretty darn good job now. Their cars may not be as hot looking as a Corvette or Mustang, but they seem to be able to build cars that are well built, practical, fairly reasonably priced and very reliable. The newly redesigned Honda Civic is a good looking vehicle, as is the Honda CRV. We own a 2001 Honda Civic and just bought a new Ford 500.

design for what? ease of maintaining the vehicle cheaply? durability? the american manufacturers do that. the japanese are there too but maintaining costs a little more. the germans build fine cars but cost more to keep running. vw is the worst of the bunch with audi right there. design as far as looks, japanese and german and italian. depends what you're asking about.

Personally I like the the cars and vehicles made by GM, Ford and Chrysler but I'm from the old school. I believe I make my money here in the U.S and I'm going to buy where my money stays in the U.S.

Most 'Japanese' cars are made in the USA. Most of GM is made in Canada. A lot of Fords are made in Mexico.
Still, buy American.
