That's where your page file comes into play. Your page file is a spot on the hard drive that the computer can use as "virtual memory". Virtual memory will function the same way as physical memory, but it will run quite a bit slower. The hard drive finds data in typically 8 milliseconds. However, physical memory does the same in a few nanoseconds. That's more than a million times faster than the hard drive. While increasing the size of your page file can improve your performance, there's nothing you can do to get the kind of performance increase that you can by installing more RAM.

To increase the size of your pagefile, go to your desktop and right-click on "My Computer". Go to properties and click on the "Advanced" tab. Under "Performance", click on the "Settings" button, where you'll see a menu. Click on the "Advanced" tab in this menu, and under the heading, "Virtual Memory", click "Change". Here you can change the size of the page file. Windows XP actually does a pretty good job managing the page file, but sometimes you just need that extra performance.

No. RAM installs directly onto your motherboard and there's no way of increasing it with USB or other devices. You can increase your "virtual" memory, but that's not the same thing.
