No, they work for themselves. Why are they not doing anything in Africa?

The UN is a great organization for promoting peace between the industrialize nations of the 21st century. However, that is just about the only time where it makes a real difference. It is an institution overflowing in soft power, and it also CAN place checks on nations that get out of hand. However, it is not in any way a substitute for a global hegemony such as the US. The UN seems more a town square of sorts than an organization with the capacity to truly reduce dangers to the world such as nuclear proliferation. It also does not provide very tangible resistances to nations that get out of hand. The UN is a positively influential institution on placing checks on nations taking potentially deconstructive steps, but it would take an expansive international conflict such as WWII to unite and militarize all of the nations taking part in it towards one goal. Perhaps it does not work to a great enough extent, but it is better than nothing. In my opinion, it should be transformed into somewhat of a global police force, one that could at least threaten a disobedient nation with something resembling true power, and if necessary wield some of its own tangible power against such a nation. Its a fine thing, but "soft" power cannot always preempt war. If it is to continue, THERE MUST AT LEAST BE SOME REFORMS.

The UN is a corrupt organization with no real power. Look at how long a little tin horn dictator like Saddam thumbed his nose at them while getting rich off of their Oil for Food program. Nuff Said.

bullwinklej - Great point. Look at the '94 allegations of rape by UN Peacekeepers in the Congo, Liberia and Sudan. Oh and who was the leader of the UN then? Koffi Anon(sp?) What country was he from again. Why was that the African nation of Ghana you say?

Over 243 armed conflicts in the world since the inception of the United Nations. And of those 243 armed conflicts the UN authorized the use of force TWICE to make thinigs right! Once in Korea, and once in Iraq during the first Gulf War. That's a "take action" percentage of 0.0082% of the time! So do YOU think the UN works? I DON'T!!!!

The UN is a colossal waste of money. If they *were* useful, they would have prevented the genocide in Rwanda. They have done their usual bang-up job with Darfur, too. In fact, if they had the cajones to back up their own resolutions, we wouldn't have been left hanging on Iraq. They are corrupt as hell - Oil for Food scandal - and their "peacekeepers" have raped little girls. Nice.

Ask those in Darfur and Rwanda how well the UN works. Ask those in Somalia and those who starved under the oil-for-food program in Iraq. Ask Iran and North Korea. The UN doesn't work.

Absolutely not. We all know that this "experiment" has failed miserably, and the time has come for the U.S. to end all involvement with this colossal mistake. The sooner the better.

How many times are we going to have this idiotic question?
The UN works only as well as its members allow it to work, and if every Tom, Dick and Harry has a 'veto', how does one expect it to work?
And when idiots like Bolton are shooting their mouths off, how do you expect it to work?
