Short term: There was a 2 decade consensus that Saddam was indeed a threat to international stability. The idea that Saddam had WMD was nothing new, along with his continued support of terrorist groups throughout the region. And finally, Saddam was always pitting nations against each other, Syria against Jordan, for example.
Long term: The cultural modification of the Middle East. There has been a strike change, with the removal of two brutal regimes (Taliban, Saddam) the modification of several others (Elections in Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia), and the overall expansion of liberties in the region (Source: Freedom House). Mind you not, I think Bush definitely views the Middle East as ripe for change.

The idea that we went to war for "oil" is irrelevant; we could have invested 400 billion dollars in our neighbors to the north and had 4-5 million barrels per day more shipping into our nation, then Saddam. We could have also used 400 billion dollars to invest in Shale Oil, coastal oil, and tar-sands in the United States.

There is something people don't know about wars...they make us money. Some people think that the government spending so much on a war is bad, but we neglect the fact that that money goes to our soldiers and their families, companies that produce weapons and gear, and bonds that jump start the economy. The real reason we got out of the Great Depression is that we went to war, creating more jobs and generating money. Sure it's a cruel way, but hey, whatever gets the job done. That's how America really became rich. Going to war, gettting more land, is what made America America. We were just protecting our assets. (oil, stocks, ect.).

We are in a war on terrorists. President Bush and Congress say we are. Some say the Iraq mess is a battle within the war on terror and others say that the Iraq mess is a separate war.

At the end of the day, we went to secure the free flow of oil from the Gulf. I'm tired of giving the longer explanation. But rest assured there is no greater national interest in the world than our energy supply.

You have to understand the reasons behind GW1 to understand why we've gone back, and why we'll soon be in armed conflict with Iran.

Someone is making money from the misery of Iraq people as well as the American troop. In my opinion, a small group of people wipe out 3 trillion dollars from Our Taxes payers and no one is not doing anything. It is very very sad now we have a record of cheat and lie in American History.

Who are "WE?"

If you're referring to the USA, then because the USA is the most powerful country in the world and wants to ensure that Iraq is within its sphere of influence and poses no threat to the USA.
