connecting a laptop xp to a pc with ME,?

my daugh has a new laptop,,,,, i want something simple so she can access the internet on it when at home,,,,,,, she really doesnt need to hook up to the printer/files etc,,,,,, i read about just hooking the two computers together, as opposed to using routers,,,,, but i didnt really understand it , we have a dsl connection

Unless your desktop computer has 2 network cards, you will not be able to share your internet in the manner you described. So either you have to get a 2nd network card for your desktop or get a router. If the laptop has a wireless network card you can get a wireless router, that way your duaghter wouldn't have to sit right by your computer or the router.
