Because it is a lack of trust which is in a very real sense a betrayal which can cause things to get ugly. Real love means real trust.

Jealousy is a natural reaction. It's just a part of life that some people have to deal with. There's always going to be someone who looks better than the next person, and as long as there is that, there will be jealousy. I'm jealous, and every guy I've ever dated is has been jealous. It's fear of the unknown. You can trust your mate all you want, it's not knowing what everyone elses intentions are with your mate that make it hard not to be jealous. It's not "ugly" to me, it's another part of being human.

Yes, jealousy is ugly. It usually means a lack of trust and the jealous person is not trustworthy themselves in many cases.
