is 99.9 too high of a temperature for an infant?

Children whose temperatures are lower than 102 degrees usually don't require medication, unless they're uncomfortable. There's one important exception to this rule: If you have an infant 3 months or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, call your baby's doctor or go to the emergency department. Even a slight fever can be a sign of a potentially serious infection in very young infants.

Multiple factors to consider. How old is the baby. A newborn up to 11-12 weeks should not develop a temperature over 100.4 if checked in the bottom or not higher than 99.4 if checking under the arm. If this is an older infant that temperature itself is not harmful at all. Actually temperatures can be a good thing. The body raises it's temperature in response to an infection, could be as simple as a cold virus. The heat is trying to kill whatever it is that is invading the body. So medicine like Tylenol is fine if baby is getting uncomfortable from the temp, not usually until over 102.0. Ibuprofen is for infants 6 months and older. However temperatures with other symptoms could warrant a call to the doctor. Is baby acting lethargic? Crying inconsolably? If unsure a call to the nurse or doc is always fine. That;s what they are there for. Good luck.

What Temperature Is Too High

Your body temperature is constantly fluctuating...especially in infants. A temperature of 99.9 is completely *normal*. Actually, anything under 102 is completely normal. It's not even considered a fever until it's above 102.

Don't listen to the answerer who suggested taking the baby to see a doctor....

ETA: The woman above me suggested giving them tylenol to break the fever. What fever!?!?! It's not a fever, your child isn't sick, and you have nothing to worry about.

Infants generally run a higher temperature than an adult or older child. If your baby's temp is over 101 then call your pediatrician.

No, that is normal, in fact is is a myth that the human body is always 98.6 degrees. Body temp can rise naturally from other things including working out.

It is not even considered a fever anymore until it is 100 degrees.
"A fever is defined as a body temperature above 100.5 degrees F. "
and it is not dangerous until around 103 (unless there is sever vomiting or diarrhea)

When my baby was born the nurse at the hospital told me to take the baby to the hospital if she gets a temp higher then 101.3. If your baby has a temp of 99.9 then give him liquid infant tylenol to break the fever. When your giving the baby the medicine put it on the side of his mouth so the baby will take most of it down. Hope this has helped!

102.0 is too high, even at 99.9 the child should be given tylenol so it won't go higher
