Simple
If you know what you want and what you want the finished project to look like simply draw it out.
You can do it on graph paper or you can do it on regular paper just make sure to make notes as you go.

For cross stitch or knitting, I've used graph paper. Draw out your design on the graph paper and then lightly color it in. Now you can see how many squares you'll need to make what color to get your pattern.

Your question was extremely vague and poorly-worded. If this doesn't answer what you really wanted (since it was impossible to tell from your wording) please try again. Tell us what craft this pattern or design would be for. Designing a pattern in woodworking or metalworking is quite different from doing so in beading or knitting or tatting or sewing, etc etc etc

well first off in knitting/ crochet it is based on squares so i cut a bunch of construction paper and started making different combinations
