This question is aimed at Indians. I have had some unpleasant experiences which I am sure many others like me have felt. I am dark skinned, and I am proud of my skin, but fed up with the reaction of people around me.

1. I have faced lots of comments behind my back because of my colour behind my back, especially in college. Sometimes I am even teased directly.

2. In college, initially, hardly any girl would speak to me. When I started driving my car to college, girls&guys I had never even met before wanted to be friends. I was appalled by the shallowness of it all.

3. Come marriage and the first thing that people ask is details of colour, followed by money. This applies to both guys and girls. It is really sickening. Has the importance of character been diminshed?

The first two points really disgusted me and I am most not getting involved in any relationship because I just cannot believe that I would find someone who will respect me for what I am. Where is my country headed?

Dark skin isn't really an attractive colour. Its looks like poo and has appearances of being dirty.

Hence, why there are so many beauty products that bleaches dark skin. You might like to consider using them.

I have an Indian friend (East Indian) and she only dates white guys or very clear skinned Mexican guys. Also she doesn't fit the mold of the "regular" Indian girls. She's very enlightened, she's not bound by religion or wear saris and such.I noticed a lot of guys especially white guys always stare at her. She's like a size 00,very curvy and very fashionable but what I love most about her is her attitude and sense of humor.Great friend she is.I don't think she knows how attractive she is but based on the guys reaction, she's a beauty.

In many cultures, even centuries ago...for some reason, women are preferred to be lighter than men.

For example, in ancient egypt, if you look at some of the old paintings, you will notice that women are painted in a much lighter color than the men.

Its most likely due to culture - the reasons or facts I don't entirely know...

my boyfriend is Indian..he tells me he likes the fact that I'm white, but doesn't care much for skin color. I guess maybe it also has to do with white being a symbol of innocence and purity and black or darker being a symbol of power and strength (associated more with men)???

Just a thought I guess...

people have a right to date who they want dear, and they certainly have a right to "marry" who they want...
you would not want anyone who did not want to be with you, would you?
shallow? I don't know... Can it not just be "preference." I am wondering if sometimes people are just attracted to, whom they are attracted to, and not attracted to others, maybe not even conciously...... simple as that..I don't think this necessarily makes them terrible people.
on the other hand...I don't see why people should stay away from being your friend just because of color...if this is the case, then they are in the wrong...
hope you find a nice companion

This one doesn't feel that way I love the color of my skin along with my long black hair and dark eyes. I am aware that the darker the berry the sweeter the juice will be.

Because they are trained to think that way due to the cast system in India.
