My gynocologist has recommended a D&C because of excessive uterine bleeding, the presence of precancerous cells (whatever those are), and polyps. What does the procedure include? Is it painful? What is the recovery time? I was upset at the doctor's office, so I didn't ask any questions.

A D&C is when the MD "scrapes" the uterus lining (does this vaginally). You may feel some discomfort and cramping afterward. I had this done 20yrs ago, and was awake, the procedure is either done in the office setting under local anestheis, or at a hospital w/general anesthesia. The cervix is clamped and a speculum is inserted. If you have local anesthesia, ask the Dr. for a sedative too. It's not as scary as you think. You'll need to take it easy for a few days, so try to have it done on a Thurs. or Fri. if you don't work weekends. There is more info on the internet, just type "D&C gyn" and you'll get a lot of info. Don't worry--You'll do fine! (After the procedure, treat yourself to an icecream and watch a funny movie on TV--LOL)

you're either asleep or under a heavy local. I was asleep. They dilate your cervix, then hmm, no good way to say it, scrap the inside of your uterus. You bleed at after. I felt swollen, not too painful though, I maybe took 3 advils after. But I bled like I was dieing! Can't use tampons or have a bath afterwards until you stop bleeding though, for risk of infection. I was one of the FEW women who got an infection after - single more painful thing in my LIFE! its RARE.

Good luck, its fairly routine day surgery. My Mom has had it done 3 or 4 times now, she's just fine. so am i.
