It's somewhat of a trick question. They want you to think you have to compute the 2nd place amount and add it to the first place amount, but you really don't need to know the 2nd place information, at all.
The key is that the winner gets 1/2 of the prize money. Since you are told that the winner gets $6000, all you have to do is double the $6000 to find out the total prize money distributed. So, your answer is $12,000.
Of the $12,000, $6,000 went to the winner, $1,500 went to 2nd place, and the rest must have been distributed to some of the rest of the contestants.

If the winner receives half the prize money and the winner received $6,0000 then the total prize money must be $12,0000.
Presumably the difference went to other catagories not detailed in the question

My other answer was wrong. It is 12,000!
If the winner got half the prize money and they got 6,000 dollars, that means the entire prize money was 12,000. The part about the 2nd place winner doesn't matter. They got $1,500 but it doesn't change the entire amount of prize money.

1/2 is equal to .5 and 1/4 is equal to .25. In math, of always means multiply. .25 of .5 is .125. .125 of 6000 is $750.

$12,000. looks like this is a bit of a trick question by adding the 2nd price bit.
