He has not been throwing up, but he's soiling hsi nappies at an average of 3x a day, and his stools are soft yellowish like dark mustard. His elder sister is lactose intolerant, and we found out this after she was soiling her nappies every hour (but no gas or vomitting either). She is now on soy formula.

Its really rare for a 4 month old to be lactose intollerant. Casein-allergic, or allergic to dairy is possible.

Lactose intollerance would show stomach discomfort, failure to thrive and a severe diaper rash.

Casein allergy can have alot of different symptoms: weak immune system, gas, congestion, eczema, reflux, ear infections... etc etc...

What are your babes symptoms?

ETA:
Breastfed or formula?
Those poops sound really normal to me, but my son is breastfed, so I dont know if that would be normal for a formula-fed baby.

Is your daughter lactose intollerant, or casein-allergic? Theres a big difference.

Lactose intolerance would show signs of gas, diarrhea, spitting up, fussiness. It's really quite common. Switch to soy for baby's comfort.
My son had a cow's milk protein (casein) allergy, diagnosed at 6 mos. Immediately after starting (milk-based) formula he would vomit, fuss, and finally broke out in hives. Regular formula, milk, cheese, yogurt, etc., would bring on this severe allergic reaction.
You can tell if the baby is uncomfortable or on the verge of death and rule out an allergy and assume lactose intolerance. Simply switch to soy and see if the baby seems less fussy and spits up less.

I found out my daughter was lactose intolerant at 3 weeks. About 5 minutes after she finished her bottle, she would scrunch up her face, wiggle around, turn bright red, and scream. She could not pass that gas. She would also only have a bowel movement once every three days. I kept telling the doctor something wasn't right - they said it was fine that she goes 2ce a week and to give her simethicone for the gas. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and went to the store at midnight and just bought a can of lactose free. After the first feeding, it was about 80% better and a week later, it all went away.

my son threw up almost everything he ate. that's how we knew. try switching him to soy formula if you really think lactose is the problem.
